Faulty electrical connectors determined as cause of Charlestown fire

The Guyana Fire Service has completed its probe of that fire that gutted a 3-storey apartment building in Charlestown two nights ago. It has been determined that an electrical fault in one of the apartments ignited the blaze.

The Fire Service explained today that the blaze was caused by a slack connection to electrical points, which caused overheating, and resulted in a breakdown of the installation, leading to arcing and sparking and the subsequent ignition of nearby combustible materials.

A total of 15 people have been affected by the blaze as they watched their belongings go up in smoke. Among those affected is former national footballer, Gregory “Jackie Chan” Richardson. He was reportedly at a football practice match when he learnt of the fire at the apartment building where he lived.

The Fire Service said that in addition to the building that was completely gutted, two additional buildings, a motor car and a motorcycle were also damaged as a result of the heat from the blaze.

The Fire Service is encouraging homeowners to be vigilant in their homes and to install fire detectors and fire alarm systems.

Persons are also being reminded to never overload their electrical outlets or use illegal connections. Electrical cords should also not be placed on carpets, beds or close to curtains since they are all combustible materials.

The Fire Service is also encouraging citizens to unplug appliances when not in use.
