The People’s National Congress Reform, which is the largest party in the coalition government, has welcomed the appointment of Justice Claudette Singh as the new Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission.
At the party’s weekly press briefing today, PNC Vice President Dr. George Norton said over the years, Justice Singh manifested that she is independent and a true servant of the people of Guyana.
“The appointment of Justice Claudette Singh means that the Elections Commission has a Chairperson again. It is properly constituted and can continue to prepare for the conduct of free, fair, timely and credible election”, Norton said.
Reading the party’s prepared statement, Mr. Norton also accused the opposition of stoking the flames of racism as the election period approaches.
“The PNCR takes note and calls attention to the PPP continued practice of stoking racial tensions to create an environment of mistrust and disunity among Guyanese. This has been their pattern in and out of government. The PNCR calls on all Guyanese to reject this type of campaigning and embrace social cohesion and national unity”
At his press conference earlier this week, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo raised concern about the number of Haitians who have been traveling to Guyana.
The Haitians have been using Guyana to get to French Guiana through Suriname, but Mr. Jagdeo believes that the increase in the number of Haitians coming to Guyana should be probed.
Haiti is a member state of CARICOM, and like the other member states, its citizens enjoy free movement within the CARICOM region.
