Police Corporal remanded to jail over accusations of corrupt transactions and bribery

A Police Corporal was remanded to jail today after he was charged with three counts of corrupt transactions.

The young policeman, Omale Damon, appeared before the Chief Magistrate this morning charged with collecting $480,000 through corrupt transactions.

The Policeman is accused of contacting a relative of a man who was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and offering to get the man released and the charges dropped for a cost.

The Policeman allegedly collected $200,000 in cash initially then allegedly requested a further $200,000 and was given the amount.

The Court heard that the Police Corporal made a request for an additional $80,000 and it was at that stage that his alleged victim confided in a friend who later contacted the Police.

A sting operation was set up and Corporal Damon was arrested just after he allegedly received the additional $80,000.  The money was found in his possession.

In Court today, the Policeman pleaded not guilty to the charges, but the Magistrate refused to grant him bail.  He will remain behind bars until the 26th August when the matter will be called again.
