The Guyana Police Force is reporting that there has been a 27% decrease in murders, when compred to the same period in 2016.

In its latest crime report, the Police stated that at the end of November, Guyana had recorded 99 murders since January 1.

Of those 99 murders, 48 were considered disorderly, 16 stemmed from domestic incidents, 14 were related to robberies, 7 have been considered executions and the remaining 14 have been classed under the unknown and others categories.

The Police Force is also reporting a 10% decrease in serious crimes and a 16% decrease in robbery under arms. However, robberies with no instruments have increased by 11%.

However there was a 43% increase in robbery with violence with instruments other than firearms and a 47% increase in robbery with aggravation. A 6% decrease in cases of rape was also recorded.

And from January to November, 115 illegal firearms were seized compared to 97 for the same period back in 2016.  The majority of illegal weapons seized were pistols.

Most of the illegal weapons were seized in A’ Division which includes the capital city.

During the budget debates, Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan noted the crime statistics and said efforts will continue to further reduce crime.

He said more cases are being solved and that may be as a result of more training locally and internationally for the lawmen and investigators.
