The Guyana Police Force is looking to increase its manpower by 900 persons by the end of 2016. Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud made the announcement on Thursday during the opening of the annual Police Officers’ Conference.
Mr. Persaud said the Force will be graduating almost 300 new recruits in the coming weeks.
The Guyana Police Force is currently short by some 1,500 ranks of its 5000 demand. President David Granger also expressed the hope that increasing the capacity and manpower of the police force would be top on the agenda of the institution this year.
“The Police Force must have sufficient manpower and brought up to strength,” President Granger said. In 2015, the GPF was given the approval by the former People’s Progressive Party for an increase in its establishment from 3,410 to 4,956. That approval stemmed from a request from the Force.
But despite its recruitment drive, there were no subsequent reports of it being able to achieve the goal. The Force has been training batches of recruits, while Officers have been going into retirement.
Roughly 300 recruits are trained every six months. The Commissioner said the GPF is looking to increase its land and water capacity.
He used the occasion to also commend the President’s 5-Point Strategy and the launch of the joint service “Operation Dragnet” which he said to bring crime under control. Mr. Persaud also said that the posture of the government on unprofessionalism behavior in the public sector and corruption have been helpful in enhancing public confidence
