Police probing drugging and rape of woman at Soesdyke bar

The Guyana Police Force has announced the arrests of a number of persons over the alleged drugging and rape of a 20-year-old woman at the Rhagoo’s Sports Bar at Soesdyke.

The incident took place in front of patrons who were attending a party at the bar, and many of them rather than intervening, recorded the sexual assault on their phones, while others encouraged the act. Recordings of the incident have been making the rounds on social media.

In a statement this morning, the Police said the young woman was taken to the Police to file a complaint by indigenous rights activist and AFC member, Laura George.

The young woman has alleged that she was drugged and raped by three men at the bar.

The bartender and other persons of interest were arrested, the Police said, while efforts are being made to contact other suspects and witnesses who were seen in the video.

The incident has been widely condemned, with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Human Services both urging a detailed investigation. The Ministry has announced that the bar has since been closed down. The Human Services Minister has said it should remain shut.

Political parties, Forward Guyana Movement and A Partnership for National Unity, in separate statements, both condemned the incident and called for a thorough and swift investigation.
