PPP objects to Priya’s fmr. Communications Consultant being hired by GECOM

The governing People’s Progressive Party wants the Guyana Elections Commission to reverse its decision to hire former Guyana Power and Light Inc. Public Relations Officer, Richard Francois as the new Public Relations Official for the Elections Commission.

Francois who is a University of Guyana graduate worked for a number of years in the Public Relations Department of the Guyana Power and Light Company before he moved on as one of the Strategic Communications Consultants for Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand.

He also worked as a freelance radio announcer for the state owned National Communications Network for a number of years.

At a Tuesday morning press briefing at Freedom House, PPP General Secretary Clement Rohee claimed that Francois should not be hired because of his alleged “political allegiance”.

Although Rohee appeared to be pointing that Francois was aligned to one of the opposition parties, he could not name the parties when asked to further  expand on his objection.

He said the PPP was not making its objection without enough information.

According to Rohee, his party believes that Francois’ appointment runs counter to GECOM’s claims of appointing professionals.

The post for a PRO for GECOM became vacant after the former PRO Vishnu Persaud was appointed as the Deputy Chief Elections Officer. The Elections Commission has not responded to the calls from the PPP’s General Secretary.
