President Irfaan Ali has offered his congratulations to US President Elect, Donald Trump on his return to the White House. In a statement on Facebook, President Ali congratulated Trump and said Guyana looks forward to working closely with the incoming administration to further strengthen the already robust ties between Guyana and the US.
Guyana and the United States have shared close ties for more than five decades and the US has been supportive to Guyana in a number of critical areas, ranging from security to economic development.
Trump, who previously served as America’s 45th President but lost his re-election bid four years ago, will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States in January. The race was called in his favour early this morning by the US media that projected that he had crossed the 270 electoral votes needed to capture the Presidency.
Trump’s election is being seen as historic as he will become the oldest person to take the office of the President. He pulled off his win against US Vice President Kamala Harris, who had campaigned on a number of critical issues ranging from abortion rights to democracy.
Trump was the US President in 2020 when President Irfaan Ali and the People’s Progressive Party won the General Elections here in Guyana with the final results coming five months after the close of poll.
Trump’s Secretary of State at the time, Mike Pompeo, became the highest ranking sitting US Government official to visit Guyana in 2020, months before the US Elections that eventually saw Trump being ousted.
