President Dr Irfaan Ali met today with the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of War, Joseph M. Humire, at State House.

According to a statement from the President’s Office, during the meeting, the President emphasized that the sovereignty and defence of Guyana are central priorities for his government.

The discussion also focused on strengthening and expanding Guyana’s strategic partnership with the United States, with a shared commitment to peace and security across the region.

Mr Humire was accompanied by his delegation and the United States Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot.

Guyana’s Foreign Secretary, Mr Robert Persaud; National Security Advisor, Captain Gerry Gouveia; Chief of Defence Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan; and Head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency, Colonel Sheldon Howell were also part of the meeting.

The US Government is currently conducting a military operation in the Caribbean and Latin America as part of its effort to stem the flow of drugs from South America. Last week, the US carried out an airstrike on a vessel suspected of ferrying cocaine from Venezuela. The 11 persons onboard the vessel were all killed by the airstrike.
