AFC hopes recommendations from Election Observer Groups will receive attention from Government and GECOM

For the first time since its formation in 2005, the Alliance For Change will not be represented in Parliament, as the party failed to secure a single seat following last Monday’s General and Regional Elections.

The People’s Progressive Party/Civic will be heading into the Parliament with 36 seats followed by the WIN party with 16 seats, the APNU with 12 and the Forward Guyana Movement with 1.

In a statement following the results, the AFC said despite the many challenges leading up to the elections, especially at the level of GECOM, it still accepts the results of the elections.

“Interacting with the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) was not without its challenges and now that the Commission has officially announced that the People’s Progressive Party Civic has won these elections, we accept the declaration and extend congratulations to Dr. Irfaan Ali,” the AFC said.

The party had been working as part of a coalition with the APNU since 2015, but left the coalition, which it said was a move to reclaim its identity.

The two parties earlier this year tried to form another pact, but talks broke down over leadership and other issues.

The party said it has spent the last year preparing for the General and Regional Elections by engaging with citizens across the country and spreading its message.

“The Alliance For Change takes this opportunity to thank the people of Guyana who exercised their right to vote and who remained peaceful over the past few days.

We remain committed to good governance in Guyana and will continue to advocate for justice, a fair share, equality and equity for all citizens,” the party said.

The AFC said it has also noted the comments of the Observer Missions on the process leading up to the elections including campaign finance and the misuse of state resources and hope that their recommendations will be taken into account by GECOM and the new PPP administration.
