The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) has declared the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) the winner of the 2025 General and Regional Elections held last Monday, paving the way for President Irfaan Ali to be sworn in for a second term this morning.
The party won by a significant majority, securing a total of 36 seats in the National Assembly, while the recently formed, We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party gained 16 seats, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) picked up 12 seats, and the Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) secured a single seat.
“The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) at a specially convened statutory meeting tonight, Saturday 6th September, 2025 has declared the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) the winner of the 2025 General and Regions Elections held on the 1st September 2025, and declared, the PPP/C’s Presidential Candidate Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali the elected President,” GECOM wrote in a late night press release.
The official declaration of the results came five days after thousands of Guyanese went to the polls, two partial recounts in Regions 4 and 5 and a rejected request by APNU Presidential Candidate for there to be a forensic audit and or abortion of the elections.
GECOM said the declaration was in keeping with the Constitution, and based on the advice of the Chief Election Officer (CEO), Vishnu Persaud, which was tendered to the seven-member Election Commission at a duly summoned meeting.
An earlier meeting of the Elections Commission on Friday night was aborted due to the lack of a quorum.
In offering congratulatory remarks to President Ali and the PPP/C, GECOM said it remains committed to working with all stakeholders as it continues to fulfill its constitutional mandate and serve the people of Guyana.
