Despite his party’s concerns about the voter’s list, Leader of the People National Congress and Opposition Leader, Aubrey Norton today hinted that his party will contest the upcoming Local Government elections, even as its coalition partner, the Alliance For Change (AFC) announced that it will not contest the elections with the current voters list.
At his weekly press conference today, Mr. Norton said that his party has a duty to protect its constituency and will not allow the governing people’s progressive party to take control of its strongholds.
“The PPP hopes that nobody will go and they will get all the seats and dominate and control this entire society. We have made it clear that we will protect our strongholds. How we do it? We will disclose once we would have completed all of our analysis, but what we are sure of, we are not going to allow the People’s Progressive Party to take over Georgetown, Linden, New Amsterdam, etc,” Norton said.
The Opposition Leader said his party will do what is in the best interest of the Guyanese people, but in particular he said, the APNU will not let down the Guyanese people who continue to look to the Opposition for leadership.
“We will engage and then we will determine what is in the best interest of our people. For instance, we have strongholds in Linden, we have strongholds in New Amsterdam, in Bartica, in Mahdia and in the last elections we beat the PPP in Rose Hall,” the Opposition Leader said.
But even as the APNU hints at contesting the upcoming elections, its concerns with the voters list still remain.
The Opposition has dispatched a letter to the Guyana Elections Commission, requesting a meeting with the full commission to raise its concerns before pronouncing on elections related matters.
GECOM today announced that the forms for the submission of the list of candidates to contest the elections are now available.
