Norton suspects Government might call early national elections; Urges supporters to be mobilised

Predicting that President Irfaan Ali will call General and Regional Elections long before 2025, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton believes that the Opposition needs to be mobilised since he is of the view that the Opposition would be victorious at the elections.

“We will continue to campaign until they call the elections, and we guarantee, when the elections are called, we will beat the People’s Progressive Party,” the Opposition Leader said on Saturday.

At the time, he was addressing supporters at an APNU+AFC and WPA Rally at the Golden Grove Market Square.

Mr. Norton urged members and supporters to go into villages across the country and mobilize support for the coalition, as he stressed the importance of removing the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) from Government.

“My friends, we have a glorious opportunity, we have to take it. I want to urge you this evening, to go into every village and let us prepare for elections…I do not believe the PPP will wait until 2025 by that time, they will be so unpopular, that they don’t stand a chance, so the money you see them giving out now, really and truly, they are preparing the base but you know they can’t win at all with a clean voters list,” the Opposition Leader said.

Notwithstanding push backs from the Government, the Opposition Leader assured his supporters that APNU+AFC will continue to lobby and press for a clean voters list ahead of those elections.

Labelling the PPP/C as “oppressors,” Mr Norton contended that since the Irfaan Ali Administration took Office in 2020, it has not only marginalized and victimized key segments of the population, but continues to enrich a selective few at the expense of the majority.

Noting that the country is at a critical juncture, Mr. Norton said Guyana does not have a resource issue but issues of mismanagement and discrimination.

“We have to understand that Guyana at this point has the resources to ensure all of our people benefit but the approach of the People’s Progressive Party is to enrich a few at the expense of the majority, and that we must confront. The problem in Guyana today is not the absence of resources, is the incompetence of the Government and the discrimination they use in the allocation of the resources,” he said.

He said under an APNU+AFC Government there will be equitable distribution of resources, pointing to the last time the coalition was in office.

He said all Guyanese must and will benefit from the country’s Oil and Gas resources, noting too that they will be equipped with the requisite skills and knowledge to effectively manage those very resources.

According to Norton, the Government is in the business of giving “handouts” while failing to put in place a comprehensive plan to mitigate or eliminate poverty in the country. Contending that the “handouts” are aimed at political control, Mr. Norton further opined that the Government simply wants to keep the masses poor.

“I said before and I will say it again the biggest obstacle to development in Guyana is the People’s Progressive Party, and I have said before, if Guyana is to grow, the People’s Progressive Party must go”, he stated.
