President and Opposition Leader hold discussion on Venezuela’s threats

President Irfaan Ali and Leader of the Opposition Aubrey C. Norton, have discussed the ongoing threats against Guyana by neighbouring Venezuela.

The Opposition Leader was briefed on the latest Government position by the President over the weekend.

In a statement, Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton said that he reaffirmed the opposition’s

support for Guyana’s long held position that the Arbitral Award of 1899, settled the border between Guyana and Venezuela and that Essequibo belongs to Guyana.

Mr. Norton also informed the President that they are all united on the issue and reassured him of the Opposition’s support of all measures aimed at protecting Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In the statement, Mr. Norton also indicated to the President that the Opposition supports the view that Guyana has the right to undertake economic activity within its territory and and in its appurtenant maritime territories.

The Opposition condemned all forms of aggression by Venezuela against Guyana, and also welcomes the support of the international community in protecting Guyana’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

The Commonwealth, the OAS, CARICOM and a number of other international organisations have raised their collective voices against the recent statements from Venezuela claiming Guyana’s territory.
