Representatives of President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo are scheduled to meet this afternoon to begin “hammering” out the process for the official submission of nominees for the position of GECOM Chairman.
Public Health Minister Volda Lawrence, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan and Director General of the Ministry of the Presidency Joe Harmon have been selected by the President as his representatives for the discussions.
The Opposition Leader is being represented by Party Executive Members, Gail Teixeira and Anil Nandlall.
Today’s meeting is set to begin at 5pm at the Ministry of the Presidency and is expected to examine the eleven nominees resubmitted by the Opposition Leader as well to take on the President’s suggestion of possible nominees to be added to the Opposition Leader’s list.
Over the weekend, Ms. Teixeira wrote Mr. Harmon and provided him with the names of eleven persons who were previously rejected but who are still interested in being considered for the GECOM top job.
The Opposition Leader has said that he is not averse to the President offering suggestions.
The representatives of the President and Opposition Leader will be expected to go back to the two leaders with information regarding the process with the aim of getting the two to reach some consensus on the six names that should be officially submitted for consideration by the President.
Both the President and the Opposition Leader have indicated that they want the process for a new GECOM Chairman to be completed within days.
The Constitution of Guyana provides for the Opposition Leader to submit a list of six nominees who must not be unacceptable to the President.
