President announces “Order of Democracy” national award

On the anniversary of the 2nd March 2020 elections, President Irfaan Ali has announced that he will be instituting a new national award, the Order of Democracy.

In a midnight statement, the President said the award will be in recognition of those who defended Guyana’s democracy.

The President said in the aftermath of last year’s elections, a plot to subvert the democratic will of the people was not allowed to succeed.

“The Guyanese people were determined to resist and repel the public mischief which was being orchestrated. Were it not for the vigilance, courage and resoluteness of our Guyanese people, supported by the international community and witnessed by the international election observers, our country would have returned to the dark days of tyranny”, the statement from the President’s Office said.

President Ali said the names of those to be invested with the Order of Democracy will be announced later this year.

The March 2020 elections saw final results being announced five months later after a national recount.

That national recount, which was agreed to by the then President and the then Opposition Leader, was triggered by irregularities observed in the tally of the Region 4 votes.

The recount itself unearthed additional irregularities in the Region 4 votes.

Since the final election results were announced last August, a number of GECOM officials have been charged for alleged fraud. They have all denied the charges.

The elections are also now the subject of an election petition case before the High Court.
