President dismisses Norton’s call for quashing of elections and forensic audit as “absolute nonsense”

President Irfaan Ali has dismissed the APNU’s call for a forensic audit of the elections and the quashing of the entire elections as “absolute nonsense”.

The President this afternoon, as a candidate in the elections, visited the recount of votes for a specific area that was ongoing at the Elections Commission.

Speaking to reporters after leaving the GECOM office, the President said Mr. Norton’s letter to the Elections Commission and his call for the aborting of the electoral process is ridiculous.

“First of all, you lose the elections and you ask for a recount, and the recount shows that you still lost the elections, and now what do you do…the life of this country is important, and the people continues to see who plays with the life of this country. And who plays with the lives of the citizens and who don’t care anything about the citizens, and the development of this country”, Ali said.

The President said it is time for the country to move forward.

“We have to keep this country intact, and safe. We have to ensure that our international investors are ready to invest. And that we demonstrate to the world that we are a democracy that is credible. We have demonstrated in these elections, but more importantly, that investment and investors’ confidence is always high. And this is just playing games with the country. Playing games with people’s lives. Playing games with the electoral process”, the President said.

He noted that all of the electoral observation bodies have hailed the elections as fair, noting that he did not observe any irregularities with the vote.

Based on the declared results from the 10 Electoral Districts, the PPP has been re-elected to Government with a larger majority. Once the final results are declared by the Chief Election Officer, it will set the stage for the swearing in of the President.
