Despite the sudden surge in new COVID-19 cases believed to be caused by the Omicron variant, President Irfaan Ali this afternoon assured that local Health Authorities are in control of the virus.
With the Health Ministry warning that the situation could worsen in the coming days, the President said the country is fully prepared to handle the situation.
“As of now with what the Minister and the Health professionals have communicated we are in control. We have enough testing kits, we have enough capabilities, we have enough capacity to manage this situation.
The President said the plan now is to stay ahead and pursue ways of seeking the balance. He assured that there will not be any disruption in government services even as the cases mount.
Guyana has recorded more than 1000 new cases of the virus in the past two days alone and the Health Ministry is warning that the numbers will continue to climb.
“But I just want to assure the Guyanese population that we are focused on a few things, keeping the public service functional so that we can deliver public service and public goods and also managing our Health facilities and our Health personnel who are critical in this phase,” the President noted.
President Ali observed that the new variant is having an impact on Health Care delivery as Health Care workers are turning up positive with the virus, but he noted the situation is manageable.
“So I want the population to understand that what we are faced with is what the entire global community is faced with, this morning I spoke to a number of Prime Ministers in the region and the report is the same, there is greater positive results among the population but all the focus is on managing the Health Care system,” the President said.
The President said persons need to wear their masks and if they are not vaccinated, to get vaccinated soon.
He said there is an adequate number of vaccines still available.
