President warns citizens against jeopardizing Guyana’s security with their vote

In a sunrise political message to the nation from State House, President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday trumpeted his Government’s accomplishments over the past five years, while warning that voters should not jeopardise the nation’s security with their vote at the upcoming elections.

In the 15-minute broadcast, President Ali took aim at the nation’s security and zeroed in on cooperation with the United States. In an apparent reference to the candidacy of billionaire businessman Azruddin Mohamed, who remains sanctioned by the US Government for alleged tax evasion and gold under-declaration, President Ali said Guyana’s relationship with the US should not be put at risk.

“We must understand that one of our greatest threats is Venezuela. And to fight this threat, it requires diplomacy. It requires partnership. And one of our greatest partners is the United States. We can’t risk our relationship with the United States, who have already said to us that they have serious national security concerns about individuals. One such individual believes that he can sacrifice the safety and security of an entire country for his self-interest”, the President said.

He said as Guyanese head to the polls on the 1st September, the choices are clear,

“Our safety, our stability, our transformation, it is fragile. But it is also strong once we make the right decisions, consistently the right decisions for our country, the right decisions for our families, and the right decisions for our community”, Ali said.

He noted that citizens are rightfully concerned about their security and national security, adding that his Government has been investing in the security architecture to make citizens safe, while working with the international partners to secure Guyana’s borders.

The President said the upcoming elections will be about leadership and understanding the needs of the country.

“A viable country is not like Christmas and Santa Claus walking around. A viable country is about strong policies, good leadership, consistent leadership, trusted leadership, and understanding of what is required to make our country great”, the President said.

President Ali also focused his early morning campaign speech on the APNU (A Partnership for National Unity) and the AFC (Alliance For Change) and their time in Government. He said the former APNU+AFC administration failed to deliver on its many promises and did not leave the nation in a better off position.

He said the opposing parties continue to fail to release plans or programmes that are geared towards the future and instead are back to offering promises.

Guyanese will head to the polls on the 1st September 2025. The political parties will gather on the 14th July to hand in its list of candidates on nomination day.
