Private Sector Commission links recent fires at Police buildings to political activists overseas; Investigations suggest otherwise

The Private Sector Commission is following the government in linking two recent fires at two police buildings to political activists outside of Guyana.

In a statement issued this morning, the PSC said it has noted a spate of fires across the city, adding that the fires represent an obvious threat to the maintenance of law and good order.

The statement made specific reference to the early October fire at the Brickdam Police Station and the fire last week at the Police Office of Professional Responsibility, Eve Leary.

According to the Private Sector Commission, it has noted that well-known political spokespersons in the United States have sought to encourage and publicly promote “terrorist” activity in Guyana.

“These calls, notably, have included the deliberate setting of fires to create instability in an attempt to make the country ungovernable. These public calls must be condemned by every rightminded citizen”, the PSC said.

The Private Sector Commission is now urging the government to act swiftly and condignly to utilize all the facilities at its disposal, to protect against this threat to the country’s safety and well-being.

According to the Guyana Police Force, the fire which gutted the Brickdam Police Station was started by a disgruntled prisoner in the lock-ups. The man has since been charged in connection with the fire, but has declared his innocence. He was arrested hours before the fire on suspicion of armed robbery. He is not known to be linked to any political party or group.

While the investigation into last Saturday’s fire at the Police Office of Professional Responsibility is still ongoing, the Fire Service as part of its investigations has determined that the fire started in the living quarters of the Police building which is only accessed by Police ranks.

A number of ranks were questioned about the blaze. The cause of that fire is still to be determined.
