The public registration for the $100,000 cash grant for Guyanese 18-years-old and over has started in the city and surrounding areas. On Monday, the registration of pensioners started as registration of public servants is ongoing. Now, other persons can get registered in a number of areas.

According to a notice released by the Government, registration in parts of Georgetown and parts of the East Coast of Demerara started today at listed registration sites. Other registration sites covering other parts of Georgetown, the East Coast and East Bank of Demerara are to be released soon.

Today, persons in the Rupununi region who got registered last week started to receive their money.

Last week Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo explained that while the government is trying to speed up the processes, every adult Guyanese will not receive the grant before Christmas. He pointed out that pensioners and public servants will be the first to benefit from the payment this year followed by other registered Guyanese.

An estimated 300,000 Guyanese are expected to receive the cash grant before the end of 2024.

Minister responsible for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh has indicated that only persons who register for the grant will receive it. He has been encouraging all eligible persons to get registered.

Last Wednesday the National Assembly approved a $30 billion supplementary provision for the distribution of the cash grant and Government has since outlined a four-step process for the initiative which begins with the registration exercise comprising each community having a registration schedule then technical teams with pre-programmed tablets are dispatched to gather persons’ data.

The second stage is the verification of the registrants with the next stage being the payment to citizens.
