Public Service wages negotiations will begin today after an absence for several years under the previous government.
The Guyana Public Service Union announced on Tuesday that it has been invited to negotiations with the government for the wages for the nation’s public servants.
GPSU is pushing for a 40% increase. It welcomes the move by the administration but also wants allowances to be negotiated since those have not been raised in more than a decade.
The negotiations will cover the current year.
GPSU President Patrick Yarde, told a media conference that he hopes that the negotiations will not be just another show, as was done under the previous administration, when the union’s positions would be disregarded and an increase would be imposed.
Just after taking office last year, the government gave public servants an increase ranging from 5% to 26% depending on their existing salary scale.
The administration recently had a Commission of Inquiry examining the public service and intends to use some of the findings as a guide for the wages negotiations.
The Public Service Department falls under the Ministry of the Presidency and the Government’s negotiating team will be led by Permanent Secretary Reginald Brotherson.
