A man who is currently being investigated for two incidents of alleged rape in the Berbice area was on Tuesday shot to the foot after he assaulted two unarmed constables during attempts to detain him.
According to a police statement, at about 19:55 hrs ranks of a mobile police patrol at East Canefield, Canje, Berbice, approached 32 year old Malcolm Henry and during efforts to conduct a search of his person, the man resisted and assaulted the two unarmed Rural Constables.
He was shot by an armed policeman to one of his feet after he whipped out a knife and attempted to attack the officers.
Henry was initially treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he has been admitted under guard.
The two Rural Constables were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting investigations into the incident. Police said Henry is presently before the courts on two charges of robbery under arms and is also under investigation for two incidents of alleged rape.
