Police Sergeant stabbed to death, two others injured while arresting rape suspect at Matthews Ridge

The Guyana Police Force has been plunged into mourning once again, following the stabbing death of 52-year-old Police Sergeant Leonard LaRose, by a rape suspect at Matthews Ridge in the North West District.

The incident took place on Tuesday just after 5:30pm.

Two other police ranks were also stabbed and are nursing injuries this morning. The suspect was shot to the leg and is in police custody.

According to reports out of the Region One community, the three police officers went to arrest Matthew’s Ridge resident, Dennis Marks as they probed rape allegations against him made by a teenage girl.

The man went berserk and lunged at the Policemen, stabbing Sergeant La Rose to the neck and stabbing the other two officers to the chest and hand. It was another policeman who shot the suspect to his leg.

They were all rushed to the hospital in the community where La Rose was pronounced dead on arrival. The Policeman who was stabbed to the chest is still under care while the other, who was stabbed to his hand has been released.

The suspect, Dennis Marks, was taken into police custody after being treated for the gunshot injuries to one of his legs. Murder charges are expected to be filed against before the end of the week.

The incident brought back memories of the stabbing death of another Police Officer in September, 2015. In that case, the police rank, Antonio Dawson, was stabbed to death as he attempted to arrest a drug trafficking suspect at a Georgetown fishing wharf.

Police Sergeant La Rose served the Guyana Police Force for several years and had been posted at a number of interior locations. His colleagues remember him as a hard working policeman who always tried to develop strong ties with the communities where he worked. Back in 2007, La Rose was injured by “friendly fire” in the Region 7 community as a number of police officers chased after some prison escapees.
