The recount of all votes for the 2nd March elections begins today and the ballots from Region 4 will be the first to be counted.
Region 4 is the largest electoral district with more than 45% of the country’s voters.
The Guyana Elections Commission has moved to put all systems in place for the recount which should finally bring the curtains down on the elections. The recount is set to begin by this afternoon at the Arthur Chung Convention Centre at Lilliendaal.
Today marks two weeks since Guyanese went to the polls to cast their ballot and although there have been declarations by all regions, a final declaration of results will only come after the recount.
A high-level independent team from CARICOM will overlook the recount process.
That team was put together and sent to Guyana by the CARICOM Chairperson on the invitation of President David Granger following an agreement between him and the Opposition Leader for the recount to take place.
GECOM will still be in charge of the recount and Commissioners met late last evening to iron out some of the issues related to the recount.
In an address to the nation yesterday, President David Granger said the CARICOM team will have to work within the framework of the Guyana Constitution and the recent rulings of the Supreme Court.
