Vice Chairman of the Regional Democratic Council for Region Four and member of the PNC Reform, Samuel Sandy, has joined the Regional Chairman, Daniel Seeram, in throwing his support behind the People’s Progressive Party and President Irfaan Ali in the upcoming elections.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Sandy said he has consistently supported the work of the President and the PPP/C government, and stands resolute in his conviction that the Government of Guyana is in capable, visionary hands.
He said under their leadership, “Guyana has experienced unprecedented economic growth, strengthened international partnerships, and significant infrastructural development across every region. From transformative investments in healthcare, education, and housing to major advancements in energy and national security, this government has delivered results that have directly improved the lives of our people.”
Sandy said it is imperative that the current administration continues its mandate, not only to consolidate the gains, but to guide Guyana through this critical period of economic expansion and social transformation. He said the PPP/C remains the only political movement with the experience, competence, and inclusive vision necessary to unify our diverse society while responsibly managing the opportunities and challenges of our rapidly changing nation.
Sandy became Regional Vice Chairman in 2020 following the General and Regional Elections. His appointment was controversial as the Alliance For Change, which was in a coalition with the APNU at the time, had accused the APNU of going against an agreement and taking both the Chairman and Vice Chairman positions on the RDC.
The AFC claimed it was promised the Vice Chairman post. The party attempted twice to move no confidence motions against both the Chairman and Vice Chairman, but those efforts failed.
As Vice Chairman, Sandy was responsible for a number of areas along the East Bank Demerara and Soesdyke corridor. He had often complained about being marginalized in his work by the Chairman.
The decision by both the Chairman and Vice Chairman of Region 4 to lend support to the PPP over their own party, is a first for local politics. Region 4 is the most populated Region, which is home of the capital. The PNC Reform has consistently enjoyed the support of the region at elections.
In the past week, the PPP has picked up a number of endorsements from the leaders of other parties, including the leaders from The New Movement, The Citizenship Initiative and the Liberty and Justice Party. The PPP has also picked up the support of current Ambassador to Venezuela and former PNC Reform member, Dr. Richard Van West Charles.
