Minister of Public Service, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine has decided to recall his resignation from government and continue to serve the coalition government as a cabinet Minister.
His decision was announced today by Minister of State Joe Harmon. According to the Minister of State, Dr. Roopnarine met yesterday with the President in his company and the three had fruitful discussions on his portfolio and continued contributions to the government.
“Dr. Roopnarine’s contribution to this country and his ability and capacity to continue to contribute is one which the President spoke about and he is happy that Dr. Roopnarine has pledged to continue serving in the interest of Guyana”, Harmon said.
He noted that President Granger has provided Dr. Roopnarine with the assurances that the government will offer its full support to ensure he is comfortable with his new portfolio.
Dr. Roopnarine had reportedly raised his health and other issues as reasons for wanting out of the government job.
News Source understands that although Roopnarine was transferred to head the Department of Public Service in the Ministry of the Presidency, there were no clear responsibilities presented to him and the Department was still to be fully set up and staffed.
However, Roopnarine appeared to have accepted the new position and told journalists at the time, that he was prepared to continue serving the cabinet.
But the party that Roopnarine represents in the coalition government, the Working People’s Alliance, has been raising concern about the party being sidelined in the coalition and Roopnarine not consulting more with the party’s executive on various issues.
Roopnarine was Mr. Granger’s running mate in the 2011 elections and served as a senior member of the APNU when it joined forces with the AFC for the 2015 elections, which they won.
