With the need for Guyana to become an Information Technology hub with more businesses and development as a result of the Oil and Gas Sector, the Schlumberger company today donated 100 computers to the non-governmental group, Computers for Guyana, in aid of the group’s efforts to provide computers to those in need and those looking to develop themselves in a new field.

Speaking to News Source at the handing over ceremony, Head of the Computers for Guyana Aggrey Marsh explained that the initiative to provide computers to persons in need especially those single-parent homes, was birthed in a social media post that quickly bore fruit.

“We know the need in Guyana is very great, data all around is very empirical. The COVID-19 Pandemic has pushed us to get more digital and as a software engineer a few things are going to happen, students from Forms 3 to 4 to 5 are going to be all digitally ready students. So, because of that, we are doing our part to ensure that those persons who simply don’t have the money to buy a computer, or don’t have the means and they come from single-parent families are not left behind” Mr. Marsh said.

He added that while there may be some others who have pushed the same initiative, his group has been trying to do its programme differently.

It was explained that through the Computers for Guyana initiative, not just coastland communities will benefit.

“Regions 7,8,9 will be our target for the remainder of the year 2021, and with these donations, because we currently have a backlog of persons who have requested and have not received, the only issue is to get the systems to them but we will continue to ask persons and do our part”  Marsh said.

The Schlumberger oil and gas company has signaled its intention to continue to play a role in developing the education and social landscape of the country.

The company’s Managing Director Ernesto Cuadros said “the Donations are something that means a lot to us and this is just one part of our initiative on the global stewardship of the company. We give back to the locations we work and this means a lot to us”.

The Managing Director said his company will continue to support technology-driven initiatives since it depends on technologically qualified persons in its workforce all the time. (Joseph Allen)
