Seawall lime Banned between Vlissengen Road and Ocean View Hotel

The Works Ministry has made a decision to ban the regular “Sunday Night Lime” at the Georgetown Seawalls between Vlissengen Road and the Ocean View Hotel.

The move by the Ministry is part of an effort to cut back on the amount of garbage that has been accumulating in the area and to also protect the erosion of the embankment.

The seawall hangout will now be moved to the area between Camp Street and Vlissengen Road. In a newspaper advertisement, the Works Ministry announced the move saying that vendors will be relocated and are also being invited to a meeting on May 8 to discuss the decision.

Unusual high tides over the past few weeks sent waves from the Atlantic Ocean crashing over the seawalls. Sections of the Rupert Craig Highway and a number of areas in nearby Kitty were flooded and the Ministry believes the over topping coupled with garbage clogged drains led to the flooding in the community.

Thousands of persons would usually congregate at the Seawalls on Sundays and Holidays to hang out. Music systems and food carts and vendors would also be in their numbers and the area would be transformed into a celebration atmosphere.

Before moving to the now banned area, the seawall lime was held at the Seawall Bandstand area close to the Pegasus hotel and Police Headquarters. It was moved from that area because of the traffic build up that occurred and its proximity to the headquarters of the Police Force.
