Security scare as driver ignores sirens and forces Presidential security car off the road during official convoy

One of the security detail cars for President David Granger was forced off the road this afternoon after colliding with another car when its driver ignored the sirens, as the Presidential convoy was making its way to Georgetown.

The incident took place in the Farm area on the East Bank of Demerara as the President was making his way back to the city from an official event at the Army’s base at Timehri.

According to reports, as the Presidential convoy with its sirens headed towards the city, vehicles cleared the way except for one car in the Farm area that overtook a mini-bus that pulled aside. The car ended up in the path of the convoy.

While the police outriders, the lead car and the official Presidential car all avoided the collision, the back escort car collided with the vehicle and crashed into a concrete culvert.

At least two Presidential guards were injured and rushed to the hospital. The President was unharmed but his security team is said to be re-examining the way future convoys are done.

There were several traffic police officers along the East Bank of Demerara at various points to assist with directing traffic.

The Guyana Police Force has repeatedly asked drivers not to ignore police sirens and to desist from traveling closely behind emergency vehicles that have their sirens on.

An investigation into this afternoon’s accident has been launched.
