The fallout in the People’s National Congress over the APNU’s dismal performance at the September 1 elections is continuing with the Chairman of the People’s National Congress, Shurwayne Holder tendering his resignation from that key party position.
In an email to the party leader, Aubrey Norton and the General Secretary, Sherwin Benjamin, Mr. Holder indicated that his resignation as Chairman of the party was with immediate effect.
Mr. Holder did not provide any reason for his decision to walk away from the party’s Chairmanship.
He thanked the party leader, the executive and the membership of the party for reposing confidence in him over the years. He offered best wishes to the party in its rebuilding and revitalization effort.
Holder was a close ally of the PNC Reform Leader Aubrey Norton, and was elected twice to the position of Chairman as part of the Norton slate at the last two PNC Biennial Congress.
There have been calls for the leadership and executive of the party to resign over the results at the elections, which saw the PNC-led APNU losing thousands of votes, its strongholds and even the position of main opposition party in parliament.
The APNU will be heading into the new Parliament with just 12 seats. There has been some disquiet within the party over the selection of the 12 persons to represent the party in the Parliament, with some senior members complaining that there was not enough discussion and consultation done before the list was completed.
The party’s Chairmanship is a key position as the holder of that position is next in line for the party’s leadership position if there is a reason for the leader to no longer perform his duties.
Holder is from Essequibo and campaigned in that area during the last elections. The APNU lost thousands of votes in the area, with the recently formed WIN party even trouncing the APNU in many of the areas it usually won.
