The meeting that was summoned by the Speaker of the National Assembly with the Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Jermaine Figueira and Government Member, Minister Gail Teixeira and which was scheduled for today was postponed.

The meeting is now scheduled for Friday.

Today’s meeting was called off after the Speaker was informed that the Government’s leading member of the PAC, Government Minister Gail Teixeira was not available to meet.

PAC Chairman Jermaine Figueira told News Source that he is disappointed that the meeting did not take place since the delays in holding meetings of the PAC are now continuing.

He said there is a clear attempt by the Government members of the PAC to dominate and bully their way in the Public Accounts Committee and it cannot be encouraged. He said the business of the PAC needs to be done and that is the reason he has been pushing for two meetings per week, as against the one meeting per week that the government prefers.

The Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir called for the meeting this week after the Clerk of the Committee took ill and blamed her ill-health on the high-stress levels in the committee meetings.

Other Committee Clerks refused to work in the PAC meetings but one has since been identified to replace the stressed-out clerk.
