Public Accounts Committee to meet twice weekly to clear backlog

Facing a backlog of matters and financial reports to scrutinize, the Public Accounts Committee of the National Assembly has agreed to meet twice per week instead of the once per week meeting that was customary.

The Committee held its first full meeting on Wednesday under new Chairman, Opposition Member of Parliament Jermaine Figueira. Its next meeting is set for Monday.

At yesterday’s meeting, the PAC Chairman said all of the agenda items were addressed including the setting up of a Special Select Committee to address matters pertaining to the Public Procurement Commission.

“We managed to let the committee agree on meeting two times a week before Parliament goes into recess with the understanding that there is lots of work to be done at the Committee level from way back in 2016. The Committee is cognizant that we are way behind with the work in the Committee and we are committed to doing the people’s work and I believe we are off to a good start in doing the business of the PAC”, MP Figueira said.

Figueira was elected as the Chairman of the PAC last week after the Government used its majority in the National Assembly to remove MP David Patterson as the Chair, citing charges he is facing in the Courts and other issues.

The Chairman of the PAC must always be a member of the majority Opposition party.
