The Anglican Diocese of Guyana, Suriname and Cayenne along with the British High Commission in Guyana will host a Commemoration Service on Saturday to reflect on the life of Queen Elizabeth II.

The British Monarch passed away last Thursday at her home in Scotland.

In a statement, the British High Commission said the Commemoration Service will begin at 11:00am and the public is invited. Persons could take flowers to offer tribute.

The Government of Guyana has announced that Monday 19th September will mark a day of mourning in Guyana while the Queen is being laid to rest in the UK.

Both the Guyana Government and the Opposition have extended condolences to the royal family on the passing of the Queen. Guyana’s Minister of Governance Gail Teixeira is expected to represent Guyana at the funeral service in the United Kingdom on Monday.

A number of other Caribbean leaders are also expected to attend the service.

Guyana gained independence from Great Britain in 1966. Queen Elizabeth visited then British Guiana just before independence and her last visit to Guyana was in 1994.

Over the years, a number of other members of the Royal family visited Guyana on behalf of the late Queen.

Guyana fully walked away from the British Monarchy in 1970 when the country gained Republic status.
