Success Elementary School grabs top spots at Common Entrance

The Success Elementary School, which is a private school, has grabbed the top two positions at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment Examinations.

Just over 15,000 students from across Guyana wrote the NGSA examinations commonly known as Common Entrance. The top student is 11-year-old Solomon Cherai of Success Elementary who gained 530 marks out of the total 535. He will be going to Queens College when the new school year begins in September.

The #2 position went to Shania Eastman who also attends the Success Elementary. The Success Elementary School also gained the #6 spot.

Celine Farinha of the Peter’s Hall Primary grabbed the #3 position along with Shreya Persaud and Isabella Hussain of the Academy of Excellence.

Once again, the private schools have dominated performances in the top 1%. Chief Education Officer Olato Sam said the reason for that is the private schools may be able to practice things that the public schools may not be in a position to practice. He however, stated that the private schools follow the same curriculum that is offered in the public education system.

Students would have been assessed in Grades 2 and 4 before writing the Grade 6 assessment. The examinations saw improved performances in Mathematics, Science and Social Studies.

Education Minister, Dr. Rupert Roopnarine said he is not satisfied with the results but is “happy for what has been achieved”. He said there is room for improvement and the Education Ministry will be examining ways to reach that improvement over the coming months.

Dr. Roopnarine said the new President David Granger administration has already made it clear that its main focus will be education.

The results for all students who wrote the examinations will be available on the Ministry of Education’s webside –http://www.education.gov.gy/web/– from this evening.
