Suspected bandit shot dead

A 20-year-old man who Police say snatched a bag of cash from an employee of a Main Street store was shot dead on Friday afternoon just outside the New Thriving restaurant.

The dead man has since been identified Lodge resident Lloyd Hazel. According to initial reports, he was about to make good his getaway with the bag of cash on a motorcycle when a policeman who was in the area at the time and witnessed the robbery, opened fire on him. He was reportedly hit in the leg and fell to the ground.

A number of persons who were in the area at the time said the Police stood over the gunman and fired a number of other shots before other police officers arrived on the scene.

Two police vehicles arrived and the dead man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The motorcycle he was riding was also taken away from the scene by the police as investigators from the Criminal Investigations Unit arrived and cordoned off the entire area.

Traffic was diverted through the Tiger Bay area as scores of persons gathered at the scene of the shooting incident. There were no reports of the dead man being armed. A probe is underway.
