A 19-year-old excavator operator lost his life in Linden tragically this morning as the excavator he was operating sank with him in loose soil at Kara Kara, Mackenzie. The dead young man has been identified as Ezekiel Benjamin.
The Guyana Police Force and the Ministry of Labour are investigating the workplace tragedy. The Police said the incident occurred just before noon.
The young man was employed with D. Sookram & Daughters General Construction, which was involved in a sub-contract work.
According to a police report, while operating the excavator, it started to sink in the swampy land. The excavator sank from the side and became submerged in the swamp within minutes, trapping the young man inside the cabin.
Operators from another company, BOSAI, discovered the submerged excavator and raised an alarm. They were forced to break the excavator cabin’s glass window to get the man’s body out.
The body was transported to the Mackenzie Hospital Complex, where the attending doctor pronounced the him dead on arrival.
A post mortem examination is to be conducted.
