Minister of Governance and Parliamentary Affairs Gail Teixeira has indicated that she intends to write to the Diplomatic Community in Guyana to register the government’s concerns about statements made by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton against the Chairperson of the Elections Commission, retired Judge Claudette Singh.
Teixeira considers the statements to be threats and has accused the Opposition of constantly attacking the GECOM Chairperson since the last elections in 2020.
The Opposition is on record in calling for the resignation of the GECOM Chairperson, claiming that in her rulings at the Commission, she always sides with the Government’s position.
In a statement today, Minister Teixeira said the “verbal attacks” against the GECOM Chairperson expose a “sinister plot to bully and intimidate a former Judge and the Chairperson of a constitutional body”.
She also singled out local and overseas opposition activists of making statements against the GECOM Chairperson that she considers to be threats.
“Clearly Mr. Norton, his party and the APNU+AFC Coalition have not deviated from these bullyism and intimidation tactics which we witnessed during the Granger administration”, Teixeira said.
The Government Minister said the GECOM Chairperson has loyally served her country for decades and she has guarded her integrity and her adherence to the constitution and rule of law.
“These threats are unacceptable in any civilized society and must not be allowed to continue without consequences”, she said.
Describing the Leader of the Opposition as a “bully boy”, Minister Teixiera called on the Guyana Police Force to take action to investigate statements made by the Opposition Leader and others in his camp.
She believes the statements and call for a new GECOM Chair are meant to destabilize the electoral process as local elections approaches.
