A Berbice Magistrate is coming under fire after he allegedly described Police investigators as a “pack of jokers” during a Court case yesterday.
The Springlands Magistrate reportedly made the remark during the appearance of an alleged high seas pirate who is facing several murder charges.
There was reportedly some confusion in the courtroom with regards to some of the details of the charges and it was then that the Magistrate, Rabindranauth Singh, allegedly lashed out at the Police by describing them in his Courtroom as a pack of jokers. Attorneys and other persons in the courtroom were taken aback by the Magistrate’s remarks.
Acting Police Commissioner David Ramnarine was also taken aback by the remarks when he learnt of them and in a statement last evening, he said the same Magistrate may have an ax to grind with the group of investigators over another matter in the Berbice area that saw the Magistrate being removed from presiding over the case.
In his statement last evening, the Police Commissioner said the statements made by the Magistrate in open Court were derogatory, insulting and reckless and should have never been uttered.
He said police investigators have been working above the normal call of duty and in difficult circumstances to probe the cases of high seas piracy that have left fishermen dead. The results of those investigations were presented to the Police legal advisor who offered advice for charges.
Ramnarine said he believes the magistrate’s unfortunate and reckless utterances are as as result of his youthfulness, inexperience and him being unschooled.
