A roadside fistfight between a driver and a Traffic Cop that was caught on camera and shared on social media has triggered an investigation by the Police Force.
In the video, the driver could be seen hitting and shoving the Policeman during a traffic stop. The traffic officer responded by firing some punches of his own, knocking the driver out.
Acting Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken in a statement expressed his dissatisfaction over the incident.
The Top Cop said an investigation will be done in an effort to avoid a repeat of any such situation.
Mr. Hicken also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with the police. He said members of the Force should also cooperate with citizens.
“The police does not and cannot operate in isolation, thus the need for partnership and cooperation between the Police and the public – one that should be premised on mutual trust and cooperation while exploring every avenue to maintain law and order in society,” Mr. Hicken said.
According to the statement from the Police Commissioner, the Guyana Police Force is working on postures and strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures, aimed at ensuring that ranks are professional in the discharge of their duties, even in the face of harassment and intimidation from non-cooperating civilians.
The Police Officer was attempting to arrest the driver over an incident when he came under attack and responded.
There have been a number of other instances where Police Officers have found themselves coming under attack during arrests.
