Two Brazilian nationals died tragically on Saturday night when their vehicle slammed head-on into a mini-bus along the Mabura highway in the vicinity of Mabarua Hill.
The Brazilians have been identified as 54-year-old Ronaldo Scalon and 50-year-old Rogerio Tolotti. According to reports, Scalon was the driver of a Brazilian registered Toyota Hilux 4×4 pick-up and may not have realised that he was in the wrong lane driving along the roadway.
He reportedly lost control of the vehicle after driving around a turn on the roadway and slammed directly into a mini-bus that was heading in the opposite direction. The driver of the mini-bus, 40-year-old Delon Greaves has sustained multiple injuries.
According to reports, the Brazilian registered 4×4 pick-up was proceeding east along the northern side of the Mabura highway when the driver reportedly lost control and ended up in the southern lane of the highway, slamming into the bus.
The two Brazilians who died were pronounced dead at the Linden Hospital, while the injured bus driver was initially taken to the Linden Hospital but later transferred to the Georgetown Hospital.
The situation has raised new concern on the use of the highway, which is still under construction and which serves as a vital link between Brazil and Guyana. There have been calls for more awareness to be provided to drivers, especially those from Brazil who are accustom to driving on the right side of the road, while in Guyana, they will have to drive on the left side.
