URP Leader wants other candidates to show evidence of relinquishing foreign citizenship

The Leader and Presidential Candidate of the United Republic Party, Dr. Vishnu Bandhu is calling on all of the other candidates seeking a seat in Parliament to produce evidence that they are Guyanese citizens only.

Mr. Bandhu’s call comes in wake of him receiving official notification from the US State Department through the local embassy that he is no longer a citizen of the United States.

Bandhu told News Source today that when he signed the nomination proclamation for the elections he was aware that the official notification would have been granted.

He said he did nothing wrong and only informed the Elections Commission Chairman in a letter that he was awaiting the official notification.

Once that notification was granted on the 16th of January, Bandhu he was in the all-clear to move ahead with his campaigning and participation in the elections.

The URP Presidential Candidate said he is aware that there are other candidates who have indicated that they have either started the process of relinquishing their foreign citizenship or have done so already. He said he believes they should all produce the official documents to the public just like he is doing now.

The Constitution of Guyana prohibits the holder of dual citizenship from contesting parliamentary elections.

The provision was reinforced last year in several rulings by the local Courts following the passage of the no-confidence motion.

A number of candidates have indicated that they have relinquished their citizenship, with at least one Presidential candidate indicating that he is in the process of doing so.
