US Asst. Secretary of State warns Guyana about electoral issues in Twitter statement

Days after the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that he had discussions about the election situation in Guyana with the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, the Acting Assistant US Secretary of State for the Western Hemisphere, Michael Kozak, issued a warning on Twitter for Guyana.

“Under U.S. law and practice those who participate and benefit from electoral fraud, undermine democratic institutions and impede a peaceful transition of power can be subject to a variety of consequences”, the official tweeted.

The statement on twitter by the US official also issued a call on the Elections Commission to follow “accepted procedures” and allow international election observers to verify the results.

The Region Four Returning Officer has been ordered by the Court to return to the tabulation process and complete it before declaring result.

The continuation of the process started this morning, but was halted following protests over the spreadsheet system employed by the Returning Officer.

The statement by the US official came on the heels of the EU Observer Mission formally making a request for the Returning Officer for Region Four to allow the EU to examine the Statements of Poll that were used by him to come up with the spreadsheet of the results.

The tabulation process will restart on Friday.

The Elections Commission in Guyana operates under the Constitution and Laws of Guyana.
