US-based man remanded to jail for murder of daughter’s boyfriend

Four days after the gunning down of Kingston youth, Leon Gittens in his girlfriend’s bedroom, the girlfriend’s father was today charged and remanded to jail for the murder.

44-year-old Shurwayne Brandt who is a US-based Guyanese, appeared before the Chief Magistrate this morning where the murder charge was read to him.  He was not required to enter a plea and was immediately remanded to prison until the 22nd March when the matter will continue.

The Court was told that on the 19th February, Brandt shot and killed 25-year-old Leon Gittens at the East La Penitence home where Brandt’s daughter lives.

Brandt was reportedly dressed in a wig and a woman’s outfit when he allegedly carried out the execution.

The young man was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

The accused was arrested on Monday when he attempted to leave the country through the airport at Ogle.  A wanted bulletin was issued for him the day before and it was while he was making his way through immigration that the agents realized he was flagged in the system and contacted the police to execute the arrest.

Brandt was immediately taken into custody and charged after being questioned.

He was reportedly not supportive of his daughter’s relationship with Gittens and that fueled some tension between the two men.
