US Congressman Gregory Meeks who represents New York’s 5th District which covers the borough of Queens, is expected to make a visit to Guyana.

According to sources familiar with the plans to visit Guyana, Congressman Meeks was expected this weekend but his visit might have been delayed because of the ongoing impeachment hearings taking place in the US Congress against the US President.

Meeks was reportedly expected to meet with a number of officials during his visit including the members of the Opposition, People’s Progressive Party.

News Source understands that the Government of Guyana was aware of the planned visit by the US Congressman.

A few months ago, Meeks had issued a statement indicating that he was closely monitoring the unfolding political situation in Guyana.

In that statement, he said he wants to see democracy prevail as it must in all strong and thriving democracies, noting that Guyana, is one of the hemisphere’s most strategically important partners to the US and it stands at the brink of potentially transformative economic development.

When President David Granger issued a date for the elections, Meeks issued a follow-up statement welcoming the announcement.

A few years ago, the US Congressman came under investigation by an ethics committee of the US Congress after it was revealed in Court documents that he had secured a US$40,000 payment from Guyanese US businessman Ed Ahmad, who was found guilty of a multi-million US dollar fraud scheme.

Ed Ahmad was closely linked to Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo and several key players in the former PPP Civic Government. He had plans back then to make major investments in Guyana.
