High Court Judge, Gino Persaud, was blocked from boarding a Miami bound American Airlines flight from Guyana on Saturday morning after he was informed by airline representatives that his name has been flagged in the system and his US visa was under review.
Justice Persaud was informed that he should visit the American Embassy in Georgetown.
Persaud was among a group of Judges and Magistrates heading to a Judicial conference in Jamaica. His trip to Jamaica was booked via Miami.
News Source understands that the High Court Judge was unaware of any issues with his US visa as he had traveled to the US a few months ago without incident.
He is likely to seek an explanation for the “visa review” from the American Embassy in Georgetown.
Former Speaker of the National Assembly, Attorney Raphael Trotman, who is also a former Government Minister, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) said the Acting Chancellor the Judiciary needs to make representation on the Judge’s behalf. Trotman noted that while he is sure that in Guyana’s post-independence history, other judges had similar challenges, the situation is deeply troubling.
Justice Persaud has not released any comment on the issue and the US Embassy usually does not offer any comment on individual visa cases.
