The Guyana Police Force has not indicated the reason behind a party of Policemen showing up at the campaign headquarters for the We Invest in Nationhood party late on Wednesday night demanding to see Presidential Candidate, Azruddin Mohamed.
Mohamed never showed up and the Police eventually left the scene.
In a statement this morning, the WIN party described last night’s incident as political persecution targeting its Presidential Candidate.
According to the party, the Police officers showed, with some armed with high powered weapons and stormed the private property wanting to have a word with the Presidential Candidate.
The party said there was never any warrant presented and the officers refused to answer questions about their presence other than they wanted to speak to the Presidential Candidate.
“This reckless action and abuse of power by the Guyana Police Force instilled fear in family members, staff, and onlookers present at the time. We are therefore sending a strong message to the political directorate: we will not be intimidated. These fear-mongering tactics will not silence us, and we urge members of the Guyana Police Force not to allow themselves to be weaponized against political opponents of the ruling party”, the party said.
The party said it intends to raise the issue with the international observer missions currently stationed in Guyana.
“To the observer missions, we urge you to take note. Democracy is not only measured on election day but by how political opponents are treated every day leading up to it. We call on you to speak up and intervene where necessary to ensure the integrity of this election process”, the statement said.
Calls to the Commissioner of Police and the Crime Chief this morning for a comment on the incident were unanswered.
