AG Nandlall appeals to citizens to be careful with social media posts on border controversy

Attorney General Anil Nandlall is pleading with Guyanese at home and abroad to be mindful of the posts they are sharing and making on social media regarding the ongoing border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela. He has explained that some social media posts could lead to unnecessary confrontations and stir up people’s emotions.

On his “Issues in the News” television programme, the Attorney General said certain social media posts regarding the controversy, continue to have negative impacts on Guyanese.

“We continue to appeal as a Government to all citizens, to only listen and read the official channels of communication. There are a lot of irresponsible postings, a lot of false postings, a lot of hysterical postings, and a lot of fearmongering contained in the social media postings in particular, and we caution against such populations, they do nobody any good” the AG said.

The AG said while the government will be rolling out a massive public education campaign, every citizen has a duty to act responsibly in relation to this matter. He said the first duty is to ensure that persons seek to disseminate correct information.

“These (fake) publications certainly don’t have a positive impact on the psyche of Guyanese, and they can lead to unnecessary apprehension, tension, stress—but can also lead to provocative acts which can be inimical to our national interest at this point in time,” the AG noted.

Mr. Nandlall also urged citizens gather their information on the issue from credible sources and the Government itself.

While not touching too much on the build up of Venezuelan military personnel at the border, the Attorney General said it is likely that the International Court will release its ruling on Guyana’s recent objections to the Venezuelan referendum before it takes place on the 3rd December.

Guyana has asked the International Court to block a number of questions in the planned referendum that references the border controversy and Guyana’s Essequibo region.
