The Guyana Elections Commission has been able to verify over 60% of the first time registrants.
In a data release, the Commission said that of the 16,863 new registrants, it was not able to verify 6,534.
GECOM’s Public Relations Officer said those who were not verified might not have been home at the time of the verification exercise. The largest number of those not verified came from Region Four. Of the 7,713 new registrants in Region Four, GECOM was unable to confirm verification for 3657 of them.
For five days, GECOM field workers went in search of the over 16,000 persons who got registered for the first time during the house to house registration exercise which was cut short.
GECOM gave itself five days last week to verify the new registrants.
It was a decision that was supported by the opposition which had some concerns about the number of new registrants for the upcoming elections
During the house to house exercise, the PPP had called for its supporters not to be part of the process.
