MP Forde writes Natural Resources Minister seeking investigation report into oil audit controversy

Opposition Member of Parliament, Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde has written to the Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, requesting a copy of the investigation report conducted into the unauthorized negotiations between the head of the Petroleum Unit, in the Ministry of Natural Resources and the ExxonMobil company over the audit report and the change to the expenses that were flagged by the Guyana Revenue Authority.

In the letter to the Natural Resources Minister, MP Forde is also requesting the employment contract for the Head of the Petroleum Unit, Bobby Gossai, who the Government has blamed for the audit controversy.

Additionally, Forde has requested information on the actions that might have been taken by the Ministry of Natural Resources in response to the unauthorized negotiations, including disciplinary actions, policy changes, or any other measures implemented to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Mr. Forde said exposing any wrong doing and securing the integrity of policies and systems to protect the nation’s patrimony are crucial for maintaining public trust and confidence in the transparency of government operations.

He has asked for the requested information to be provided within seven days to allow for a thorough review.

The Opposition MP who also serves as the Shadow Minister of Legal Affairs, has also written to the Commissioner of Information, Senior Counsel Charles Ramson Snr.  requesting information on Gossai’s contract with the Government of Guyana.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has laid full blame for the oil audit controversy at the feet of the Head of the Petroleum Unit, Bobby Gossai.

The controversy erupted after information became known that the Ministry of Natural Resources through the Petroleum Unit had slashed the US$214 million in questionable oil costs to just over US$3million.

It was the Guyana Revenue Authority in its audit that flagged the US$214 million that Exxon was claiming. The reduction was reportedly done after a meeting between Exxon and the Petroleum Unit Head.

In laying blame at the Head of the Petroleum Unit for the massive reduction in questionable expenses, Minister of Natural Resurces, Vickram Bharrat in a statement said it was the Head of the Petroleum Unit, Bobby Gossai who advised on the reduction.
